The space drama Gravity, featuring Hollywood bigwigs George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, has set a record opening for an October debut, raking in a whopping $55.55 million over the weekend.

The LA Times noted that the amount pocketed by Gravity was about $20 million more than what the Warner Bros. movie adventure was predicted to make.

It was also the biggest ever opening for both Clooney and Bullock, reported AP.

Gravity did not only hit a homerun in the United States but rocketed to the top of the international box office as well, pulling another $27.4 million overseas.

Coming in second place with a total $21.5 million was Sony's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 which was last week’s top movie, followed by Twentieth Century Fox's Runner Runner ($7.6 million), Warner Bros.' Prisoners ($5.7 million), and Universal's Rush ($4.8 million).
