The Attorney-General Chambers has prosecuted 4,730 cases under the Child Act 2001 between 2011 and September 2015, Parliament was told today.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said of the number, 4,021 cases had been disposed off.

She said there was no drastic increase and drop in the number of cases between 2011 and 2013, except in 2014 when it recorded 1,243 cases, an increase of 38.7 per cent from the previous year.

The number of cases recorded in 2011 was 889, 2012 (841) and 2013 (896), she said in reply to a question from Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) on the matter.

This year alone, 861 cases had been filed in court, she added.

To a supplementary question from Teo on abandoned babies, Azizah said the case did not come under the Child Act.
