The search and rescue (SAR) team in Teluk Bahang has found one of the two men that was suspected to have drowned in Pantai Kerachut, Teluk Bahang.

The body of Ashwanpaljit Singh Charnjit Singh, 22, which found not far from the incident place at 5pm, Sunday was brought to the Penang Hospital for an autopsy.

However, the search for the final victim, Ku Muhammad Ilyas Ku Abdul Halim ,19, is still ongoing.

The operation involved more than 40 people from the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and local fishermen.

With the help of helicopters, the operation was also extended to the shores of Balik Pulau.

Ashwanpaljit Singh Charnjit Singh was among the five people swept away by strong currents in the incident which occurred at 4.17 pm yesterday in Pantai Kerachut, Teluk Bahang.

Another victim who was reportedly found dead was P.Yogambigai, 24, while two others, Nurul Ain Nabilah Mokhtar, 21, and Nur Hayati Nasrul, 22, were rescued.

Both Nurul Ain and Nur Hayati are currently receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Deputy Chief of Police Datuk A Thaiveegan said statements would be taken from the rescued victims to find out the exact cause of the tragedy.

“We will get their testimonies as soon as possible when their health allows it,” he said.

The victims were among 24 employees of an advertising company in Perai who took part in a team-building camp at the Penang National Park.

Yesterday, the National Park was temporarily closed to the public to aid in the rescue operation.
