Some 1,800 protesters gathered on Jalan Raja, near Dataran Merdeka, here, to protest against the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), despite the scorching heat of up to 36 degree Celsius today.

The rally, organised by Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) together with PKR and DAP, began with supporters gathering at multiple locations around the city at 2pm before marching to Dataran Merdeka.

Police however prevented the protesters from gaining access into Dataran Merdeka, and the rally had to be taken place on Jalan Raja.

Most of the rally-goers wear black t-shirt, carrying placards and chanted slogans “Mansuh GST” (revoke GST).

The gathering also saw opposition leaders giving their speeches criticising the implementation of GST, namely opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, Tian Chua, and Amanah President, Mohamad Sabu (Mat Sabu).

While the main objective of the gathering was to push for the revocation of the GST, many of the party leaders however took the opportunity to address some non-related issues.

Other demands made include the release of former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, call on rally participants to sign the “Deklarasi Rakyat” and also to urge for the resignations of some leaders in the country.

The highlight of the rally was at 5.15 pm when former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah made their appearance at the rally.
