The Governance, Integrity, Accountability and Transparency (GIAT) has called for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to address all questions regrading 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Apart from that, the coalition also urged for for an immediate stop to activities that may obstruct the Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission (MACC) from conducting its investigations effectively, and allow them to carry out investigations without fear and favour.

GIAT said the dismantling of the special task force investigating 1MDB, the inter-agency raids, the sudden removal of the Attorney-General and the suspension of the Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) investigations of 1MDB, has caused the integrity of key public institutions to be eroded.

"In the future, there should be no action taken by authorities that can be seen as a threat or a disruption to the investigators.

"Such actions cause people to lose faith in the MACC," said Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) Deputy President, Dr KM Loi at a press conference on Monday.

GIAT comprises few NGOs, namely Centre to Combat Corruption and Croniysm (C4), Friends of Kota Damansara, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), TI-M and Ray Project.

IDEAS CEO, Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the setting up of the RCI is necessary, especially after MACC officers were interrogated while they were conducting investigations.

"The sentiment is that the MACC itself has been investigated and this raises the question of whether the police are to be trusted or not.

"If we do not set up a RCI, what else can be done?" he said, stressing that the setting up of RCI is the last resort.

"The fact that this suggestion put forward is very sad because it symbolises our mistrust," he said.

Commenting on the same issue, C4 executive director, Cynthia Gabriel said that although there is no guarantee that the RCI would be able to adress all the questions concerning the issue, but it is the best proposal.

On Sunday, two MACC directors have been transferred to the Prime Minister's Department.

According to sources, special operations director, Datuk Bahri Mohamad Zin and strategic communications director, Datuk Rohaizad Yaakob were transferred with immediate effect, on Friday.

In the latest development today, sources revealed that the transfer of two senior officers however has rescinded, and reported to work this morning at about 10am.
