A security guard was sentenced to four months' jail by the Magistrate Court here after he pleaded guilty to a charge of kicking his eight-year-old son when the boy was preparing to perform Maghrib prayer last December.

Magistrate Zuraini Abd Razak handed down the sentence to Hasrol Azhar Rahmat, 36, and ordered him to serve the sentence from the day of his arrest on Jan 14.

Hasrol Azhar was charged of abusing his eldest son, Mutafin Azman, by kicking the boy in their flat in Wangsa Maju here at about 7.19pm on Dec 3.

The man, who has two other children aged four and two, was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries fine of not more than RM20,000 or jail not exceeding 10 years, or both, if convicted.

His violent behaviour towards his son was discovered by his sister, Rabayah Rahmat, 38, who also took the boy to Kuala Lumpur Hospital to seek medical treatment, after which the boy admitted that his father had been abusing him for quite some time.

In mitigation, Hasrol Azhar, who was not represented, requested for a lighter punishment, saying that he truly regretted committing the offence.

Deputy public prosecutor Najwa Bistamam prosecuted.
