The installation of high-quality closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras is seen to be capable of helping the
Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in resolving investigation on criminal cases.

Crime analyst Kamal Affandi Hashim said the installation of the CCTV would facilitate their investigation in obtaining evidence and facial identification of the suspects involved.

"It will also help the PDRM in terms of maintaining peace and controlling traffic movement including traffic jams because all the CCTV units were monitored 24 hours.

"For example, previously convenience stores were frequent targets of the criminals because some of them placed their CCTV sets without following correct specifications and were of low quality," he said when contacted by Bernama, today.

Kamal Affandi said installing low-quality CCTV sets would affect the visuals transmitted and hindered the process of facial identification of the criminals.

He disclosed this when asked to give suggestions on helping the police to resolve several criminal cases such as the fatal shooting incident in Georgetown, Penang recently.

In the latest case, businessman Syed Amen Jainul Abdin, 46, was shot dead at close range in front of a high-powered motorcycle shop in Jalan Datuk Keramat, Penang on Thursday.

Another crime analyst, Shahul Hamid Abdul Rahim said in addition, the CCTV could also be installed around housing areas identified as being crime-prone.

"I suggest that the local authorities installed high-quality CCTV units because many criminal cases such as murders and snatch thefts occurred in residential areas.

"This is most important in ensuring that public safety was always maintained to create a harmonious environment," he said.
