A 28-year-old man was injured in the face, chest and right arm when his mobile phone putoncharge exploded as he attempted to answer an incoming callinYan early yesterday.

Kedah Health Department director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said the man was rushed to the Yan Hospital at about 4.40ambyhis family.

"An assessment found that he suffered injuries to the right side of his face, right ear, as well as the right side of his chest and right arm.

"Preliminary treatment wasadministered butas he requiredspeacialisttreatment, he was referred to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) in Sungai Petani," he said in a statement today.

The victim was admitted to the ophthalmology (eye) ward, and examinations by experts found foreign objects in the right eye, and damage to his cornea.

"There was also bleeding in his right ear, with the eardrum believed to have ruptured due totheexplosion," he said.

The victim is currently being treated by Ophthalmologists, surgeons as well as Ear, Nose and Throat specialists at HSAH, and is set to be referred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor, to be examined by a cornea specialist.

Meanwhile, Yan district police chief DSP Muhamad Halim Yatim, in confirming the incident, said the victim was identified as Muhammad Syawal Md Isa of Kampung Titi Serong Jalan Dulang, Yan.
