PAS has retained the Sungai Limau state assembly seat by defeating Barisan Nasional with a majority of 1,084 votes.

PAS candidate Mohd. Azam Abd. Samat garnered 12,069 votes while BN’s candidate, Dr. Ahmad Sohaimi Lazim got 10,985.

The announcement was made by the Sungai Limau Election Commission returning officer Abdul Rashid Othman at about 9pm.

Despite the win, PAS’s vote majority has gone down compared to the results in the 13th General Election.

In 2008, former Sungai Limau assemblyman and Kedah Menteri Besar, the late Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Aziz, beat his BN opponent by 2,774 undi.

Azizan then got 13,294 votes while the BN candidate, Mohd. Fadzillah Mohd. Ali received only 10,520. Sungai Limau is considered a PAS stronghold as Azizan has held on to the seat five elections in a row.

Earlier today, 85.5 percent of the 27,222 voters in the constitutency cast their ballots as at 5pm.
