The upcoming Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) presidential election which will witness a contest between Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah is just a drama and the debate between them would not take place.

IDEAS Executive Chief Officer, Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the debate for the president's post proposed by former Balik Pulau Member of Parliament, Yusmadi Yusoff is good for the leadership if it is taken seriously.

"If the PKR leadership is taken seriously towards the democracy concept, then they should hold this debate. Thing this is requested by the Pakatan Rakyat itself. However, I think the debate is not going to happen," said Wan Saiful when contacted by ASTRO Awani on Saturday.

Wan Saiful said the PKR presidential election is not the right choice and described the situation as a ‘good play’.

"Wan Azizah is a proxy for Anwar. When Anwar left the prison before, Wan Azizah withdrew as Permatang Pauh Member of Parliament to make way for Anwar and now Wan Azizah is doing the same for Anwar," he added.

However, according to Wan Saiful, if the debate is to take place, it will not be taken seriously, but will be viewed as a 'joke'.

Previously, former Balik Pulau MP, Yusmadi Yusoff suggested that PKR presidential candidates, Anwar Ibrahim and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to hold a debate ahead of the party elections.

This is because the party has always called for political debates to be held on the grounds that it nourishes healthy democracy.

In a news report by Malaysiakini on Wednesday, Selangor Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said that he was not interested in participating in the debate between the PKR deputy president candidates organized by NGOs and social activists this Sunday.

According to the report, Khalid reasoned that candidates for all the positions contested are not in Kuala Lumpur as well as PKR has no television station to broadcast the debates.

However, the debate organized by Posto and Radio Bangsar Utama, entitled ‘PKR Deputy Presidential Race' has been cancelled.

PKR elections is scheduled to begin on April 26 and end on May 11, where a total of 496,923 eligible members will determine the leadership of the party.
