The Central Leadership Council (MPP) of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has rejected a proposal to nominate Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.

Instead, PKR decided to stick with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) consensus to nominate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the premiership.

The MPP held a special meeting on Friday with Members of Parliament (MPs) from the party to end the impasse of choosing a prime minister in the event of PH returning as the federal government.

"PKR remains open for talks with all parties including Tun Dr Mahathir in efforts to save Malaysia and restore the people's mandate.

"However, the party has decided not to support the proposal to nominate Tun Dr Mahathir as prime minister and remains in agreement with Pakatan Harapan's consensus to nominate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister," said the PKR MPP in a statement.

PKR also stressed that it is committed to strengthening Pakatan Harapan and will continue to mobilize the efforts of all parties to restore the people's mandate in the near future.

At the same time, PKR said it is prepared for a general election that may be called at any time.

Earlier, DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke was reported to have said that PH and its allies had explored two possible combinations for the post of prime minister and deputy prime minister.

The first combination was Anwar as prime minister and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as his deputy.

However, the proposal did not receive support from PH's allies, so a new proposal was raised which paired Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister with Anwar as his deputy.
