Astro Awani’s magazine editor, Zan Azlee, who wrote a compelling piece on Malaysian-born singer Yuna entitled, “Yuna - brilliant talent or just plain exoticism?” was recently invited as a panel on international news station Al-Jazeera’s ‘The Stream’ via Google Hangout.

The show which aired live at 3am Malaysian time on Tuesday touched mainly on Zan Azlee’s article which talked about Yuna’s exoticism and her road towards being a cross-culture 'ambassador' in the United States.

Zan Azlee, in his article first published on January 9 on Astro AWANI’s website, said Yuna’s timely emergence as a musical icon is seen as being able to correct the negative views of the American society over the Muslim world.

He added that America is currently working hard in improving its negative Islamophobic image by holding various inter-religious dialogues and also employing more Muslim chaplains amongst the police and firefighters.

Thus, it is not a surprise for a non-traditionalist Muslim pop star like Yuna, who still holds on to her faith, to gain attention and create interest among the Americans.

Zan Azlee, during the show had asked Yuna if she had taken it upon herself to provide a deeper understanding about her faith and bring people together regardless of race and religion in the international arena.

Yuna, in her reply said, that she had felt the responsibility of creating better understanding of the culture.
