Acting Semporna UMNO division chief Datuk Seri Nasir Tun Sakaran said the division was still running as usual though its former chief, former UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, has left the party.

Nasir, who is also Senallang state assemblyman, said claims that the Semporna UMNO division was no longer functioning were false and unfounded.

"Yes, in the beginning we had several problems, but we managed to overcome them. In fact, within a few days some members who left the party returned to declare their allegiance to UMNO," he said.

He spoke to reporters after attending the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) Aidilfitri Open House here today.

He said the Semporna UMNO leadership would continue to strive together in reorganising strategies to further strengthen the division.

"History has proven that Semporna has been UMNO's stronghold... and until today UMNO has been contributing significantly to the people there," he added.

Mohd Shafie announced his decision to quit UMNO at a gathering on July 4 following his suspension from the party on June 24.
