Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah overcame her illness to emerge as the overall champion in women's water ski at the 2017 SEA Games on Saturday.

Despite being dogged by a back injury and high fever, the 14-year-old put in strong performances in all three events – slalom, tricks, jump – and secured an almost unassailable lead on day one.

Today she maintained her consistency to finish ahead of Indonesian duo Nur Alimah Primabo (silver) and Rossi Rusdi Amir (bronze).

Yoong was also the overall winner in Singapore two years ago.

As for her brother, Aiden Yoong Hanifah, he was unable to recover from his fever and had to withdraw from the men's event.
