He said to date, MCMC has identified nearly 1,000 false news made viral in the country.
The younger generation are advised to make it a practice to check the authenticity of the news or information received before spreading it to avoid becoming spreaders of fake news and information.
State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Awaludin Said said the government through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had also set up a portal, sebenarnya.my, to enable the public to check the authenticity of news made viral on social media as a move to curb the spread of false news.
"To date, MCMC has identified nearly 1,000 false news made viral in the country, which not only cause confusion but can threaten the safety of the people and the country. This is a global issue.
"It is important to check the authenticity of the news before spreading it," he said in his speech during the launch of the '#Negaraku: Social Media Seminar' here today.
The seminar aimed to provide awareness on the threats of the Daesh militant group to national security, sexual crimes involving children, the 2050 National Transformation (TN 50) plan and share information concerning 'sebenarnya.my.'
