KUALA LUMPUR: Once again, the name of Datuk Mokhtar Dahari is remembered, this time via a post on Twitter by the International Football Association (FIFA) highlighting the names of individuals with the most number of goals scored.
In the tweet, the Selangor legend was named as the individual with the third highest number of goals in FIFA history with 89 goals.
In the lead before Mokhtar are Ali Daei of Iran and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal with 109 goals each.
Other legendary names include Pele (77 goals) and Lionel Messi (75 goals), on the seventh and ninth place respectively.
Mokhtar widely known as 'Supermokh' played for the Selangor team from 1972 to 1987 and represented Malaysia from 1972 to 1985.
Making his international debut at the age of 19, Mokhtar scored a total of 89 goals for Malaysia in 142 international matches.
In 1977, he led the country to their best ranking in achieving 61st in the world.
He died in July 1991 of motor neuron disease (MND), however the cause of death was kept a secret for 19 years, until it was reported in a documentary aired on National Geographic channel in August 2010.
