As Muslims around the country usher in the beginning of Syawal on Monday, Malaysians endured a rather hazy celebration, thanks to the recurring choking smog after a total of 366 "hotspots, caused by either forest fires or areas likely to soon go up in flames, in Riau.
The haze has inevitably reduced air quality to an unhealthy level in four places as at 7am today. By noon, the air quality had worsened affecting Sibu with the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 214 at 5pm.
Other areas affected include Shah Alam, Pelabuhan Klang, Kuala Selangor, Tanjung Malim, Sri Aman and Samarahan.
The API in several areas, however had declined beyond 100 at noon at Tanjung Malim in Perak (96); Samarahan (108) and Sri Aman (106). Some parts of Selangor have also recorded unhealthy API with Pelabuhan Kelang (147), Kuala Selangor (110) and Shah Alam (101).
API between 0-50 is good, 51-100 is moderate, 101-200 is unhealthy, 201-300 is very unhealthy and more than 301 is hazardous.
