KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's participation at Expo 2020 Dubai is poised to showcase the country's commitment to sustainable development and green innovation to millions of visitors expected to attend the expo from Oct 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022.

In a joint statement, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said as the first net-zero carbon fixture at Expo 2020 Dubai, the Malaysia Pavilion would have the distinctive opportunity to link its sustainability feature to the implementation of sustainability practices under the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) system.

The Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is the lead ministry for Malaysia's participation in Expo 2020 Dubai, with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre acting as the implementing agency.

"An estimated 1,500 tonnes CO2 eq of emissions ranging from the embodied carbon in the materials to construction, operations and decommissioning of the Malaysia Pavilion will be offset by forest carbon offsets generated through sustainable forest management.

"In collaboration with KeTSA (Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources), Malaysia Pavilion through MOSTI (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) will purchase 4,000 tonnes of CO2 eq worth of carbon offsets under the National Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD-plus) programme," read the statement.
