Frontline healthcare professionals fighting COVID-19 face scant supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) and it has become increasingly problematic as the pandemic continues to surge globally.

AKEMI is the latest brand to step up to assist in fighting the virus.

The core bedding brand of Eastern Decorator Sdn. Bhd announced its plans to manufacture 10,000 face shields to be distributed to COVID-19 designated hospitals in Malaysia.

“We were greatly moved by a photo of nurses in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun making face shields which are in critically short supply. Being deeply moved by it, we thought the least we could do is to lessen the burden of front-liners by making face shields for them,” Eastern Decorator Sdn Bhd Chief Operation Officer Susan Koay in a statement on Wednesday.

AKEMI representative, Shamsul Helmy Shamsuddin (left), and ADUN Pasir Bedamar, Terence Naidu (right), deliver face shields to Hospital Sungai Buloh.

“AKEMI had donated a total 2,000 face shields to Hospital Sungai Buloh and other hospitals before this with the help of a few volunteers to create the shields.

“We are currently sourcing materials to make another 10,000 face sheilds to be sent to more COVID-19 designated hospitals.”

In line with AKEMI’s core message in “Bringing Togetherness”, Koay said that this initiative is also part of the company’s corporate social responsibility commitment.

“AKEMI is also at the stage of studying the requirements of other PPE items such as shoe covers, tudung and nurse’s caps.

“With this little gesture, we hope it will help Malaysia’s unsung heroes in this tough war against the deadly outbreak,” she said.

She added that priority will be given to government hospitals.

However, if there are private hospitals which are in critical need of face shields, AKEMI will do their best to assist.
