Maiden speech: Jokowi urges people from all walks of life to work hard
"Work, work, work, is the key," said Jokowi.
Joko Widodo was sworn in as Indonesia’s seventh president today at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta with Jusuf Kalla as his Vice President, which brought a new meaning to the country’s leadership for the Indonesians especially those who have long been regarded as the inferior and the poor in Indonesia’s layers of socio-economy.
In his maiden speech as president, Joko or fondly known as Jokowi, urged all walks of life to work hard.
He said people from all walks of life including fishermen, traders, small scale businessmen to giant entrepreneurs, should work hard to create a better future for Indonesia.
"All fishermen, labourers, farmers, meatball or bakso sellers, pedlars, drivers, teachers and academicians, soldiers, police, traders, I urge you to work hard and steadfast, together,” said Jokowi.
For meatball or bakso sellers, for instance, Jokowi’s speech was deemed to be a form of recognition.
Jokowi also gave his word that he will also put in his utmost effort in providing the best leadership. He added that the burden faced by the country at the moment can be shared by the hard work to achieve unity.
“We will never gain big if we are not united and we can never be truly independent without the hard work," he said.
The term ‘hard work’ was frequently used throughout his speech.
"Five years into the future, as an independent nation, we must work, work and work. That is the key,” Jokowi said.
Jokowi wants to make sure that each citizen gets the service and attention of the government. And to achieve this, he urged all state agencies to work in the same spirit in carrying their duties and responsibilities.
"I am confident that this country will become strong and competent, should all of us work in accordance with the mandate given to our constitution," he said.
Jokowi will assume the country’s highest position in the most challenging term of administration and he has sworn during the inauguration that reads:
"In the name of Allah, I swear that I will fulfill my obligation as the president of Indonesia as best as I can and as fairly as possible,"
Jokowi’s speech was well received with high hopes by the people of the republic of over 250 million people.
