The Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is reviewing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) relating to waste disposal by the industrial sector.
Its minister Tan Sri Noh Omar said among the matters to be included in this SOP was that industrial sector must report to the Local Authorities on their waste disposal locations.
"The local authorities will ensure that waste is disposed at the proper place and that the landfill receives the same amount of waste as stated by the industries.
"We are currently working on the SOPs and the regulations will be gazetted," he told reporters after handing over the house keys to owners of the Public Housing Program (PPR) Taman Siliau Jaya, near here Thursday.
Also present were Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam and State MIC chairman Datuk L. Manickam.
Noh was commenting on his visit to Ladang Tanah Merah landfill site near here earlier yesterday.
He said apart from ensuring industrial waste was disposed of properly, it was also to assist the landfill operator to have sufficient waste to be processed into energy.
"The problem we are now facing at Ladang Tanah Merah landfill is that it doesn't have enough waste to be processed into energy.
"The landfill operator, Cypark Resources Bhd said the high-tech incinerator that would be fully operational by end of the year required 800 tonnes of garbage a day. However, thus far it only receives about 600 tonnes of waste," he said.
Noh said the ministry had made it mandatory for the industrial sector in the state to dump their waste at Ladang Tanah Merah landfill.
Meanwhile, a total of 150 people received the keys to the houses at PPR Taman Siliau Jaya and of the total, 106 participants were offered Rent to Own Scheme and the rest through loans from local financial institutions.
"Under Rent to Own Scheme, participants only need to pay monthly rentals of between RM200 and RM250 a month for the next 20 to 25 years before they can fully own the property.
"During the period, if the house recipients violate the terms of the contracts such as renting out to third parties, or are behind in paying the rentals for more than three months and misuse the premises for other purposes than residential, the government reserves the right to terminate the rental contract," said Noh.
The PPR Taman Jaya Siliau comprised terraced houses with a built up area of 700 square feet and also had a multi-purpose hall, surau, kindergarten and playground area.
In Negeri Sembilan, a total of 1,222 PPR units were built by the government and were located in Senawang, Taman Siliau Jaya, Ladang Tanah Merah, Rantau and Rembau. -- Bernama
