A shop assistant pleaded not guilty at the High Court here today to three counts of supporting and possessing materials related to Daish militant group.

Azizi Abdullah, 21, made the plea after the charges were read to him before Judge Datuk Nordin Hassan.

On the first count, the man was charged with knowingly supporting the acts of terrorism involving explosives with the intent to intimidate the public through the Telegram application on his mobile phone.

The charge under Section 130J(1)(b) of the Penal Code carries life imprisonment or fine if convicted.

On the second and third counts, he was charged with being in possession some materials related to Daish militant group in his mobile phone.

The charges under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the same Code provides for a maximum jail term of seven years or fine if convicted.

Azizi was alleged to have committed all the offences at F15, Kampung Baru Lubok Buntar, Bandar Baharu, Serdang, Kedah, between March 25 and June 29, 2016.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syazwani Mohamad Sobry prosecuted, while Azizi was not represented.
