The emergency status declared yesterday in Muar and Ledang following worsening haze conditions in both districts might be called off.

Natural Resources and Environmental minister Datuk Seri G . Palanivel said this is because the Air Pollution Index (API) reading in Muar recorded a 170 as at 5am.

"The Department of Environment (DOE) will continue monitoring the situation.

"DOE will discuss with the National Security Council (MKN) at a meeting this morning and decide on the emergency status in Muar and Ledang.

"If the situation stabilizes at this level the emergency status will be called off," he said.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak declared a state of emergency in Muar and Ledang in view of the API that has surpassed the 500 mark.

During the haze in 1997, Sarawak's API reading hit 800 and the state was declared as a state of emergency.

Likewise, in 2005, Kuala Selangor and Port Klang was declared as a state of emergency following severe haze in the areas.
