A Form Two student died Thursday believed due to leptospirosis infection after bathing at the Bukit Wang recreational centre in Jitra earlier this week.

State Health Department director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said the student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kubor Panjang was admitted to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital on Wednesday after having high fever, muscle ache and continuous vomiting for the past four days.

"He had also coughed up blood and suffered breathing difficulty a day before being admitted to the hospital.

"He was already in critical condition when brought to the Emergency Department and was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit," he said in a statement yesterday.

Norhizan said the boy also sustained pulmonary haemorrhage and kidney failure and was pronounced dead at 5.45 am.

"Initial examination and tests showed symptoms of leptospirosis.

"It is learnt that the victim had bathed at Bukit Wang recreational centre with his friends, but the department is investigating the victim's actual movement," he added.
