Four candidates will contest in the the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat, left vacant following the death of Karpal Singh on Apr 17.

Independent candidate Abu Bakar Sidek Mohd Zan was among the unexpected hopefuls who turned up to submit nomination papers at the Dewan Sri Pinang today.

He will be vying for the Bukit Gelugor seat against DAP candidate and the late Karpal’s son, Ramkarpal Singh, Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) President Datuk Huan Cheng Guan and PAS Gombak member Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar.

Another independent hopeful Lim Chee Koon was disqualified. It was reported that the money for the deposit failed to arrive.

MCA confirmed it will not be placing any candidates to represent Barisan National (BN) for the by-election slated for May 25.

Early polling will begin on May 21.

In the 13th General Elections, Karpal defeated BN candidate Teh Beng Yeam with a 42,706 majority.
