Four men wearing masks and gloves and armed with machetes robbed a money-changer's at Jalan Besar, Sungai Bakap, here today of RM500,000, said police.

Seberang Perai Selatan Police Deputy Chief DSP Shamsudin Mamat said the robbers held up the three female employees of the outlet at 9.15am and grabbed a bag containing the money that was to have been deposited today at a nearby bank.

They drove up to the front of the shop in a grey Proton Waja car and rushed into the premises brandishing the machetes, he told reporters at the scene.

The robbers, believed to be in their 30s, grabbed the bag containing the collections for the past three days and fled in their car towards Nibong Tebal, he said.

Shamsudin said no one was hurt in the robbery.

Preliminary investigation showed that their car had false registration number plates, he said.

He said police were scrutinising the CCTV cameras at the shop and nearby areas to identify the robbers.

Shamsudin also appealed to witnesses to come forward and assist the police.
