MCA would definitely take action, including using the law, to prevent PAS from tabling a motion on the hudud bill in Parliament in June, said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said the party was firm in its stand that hudud (Islamic penal code) was not suitable to be implemented in this country as this would be in conflict with the Federal Constitution.

Liow said MCA respected Islam as the country's official religion but it was also important for PAS to understand the feelings and views of the non-Muslim community who largely rejected PAS' plan to implement hudud (in Kelantan).

"The legal system and existing criminal law are sufficient in punishing criminals. Hence, the implementation of two sets of law will only confuse our multiracial society.

"On this matter, MCA agrees with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the implementation of two different sets of criminal law will divide the country," he said after a meeting and dialogue with Perlis Chinese associations, Thursday.

Liow said in the run-up to the 13th General Election, PAS was harping on welfare state but now it was a different story.

He said DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), PAS' partners in the opposition pact, should take responsibility by preventing PAS from tabling a motion on the hudud bill in Parliament, but both parties washed their hands off for others to take up the fight.

On MCA, Liow said the party was in the transformation process including drawing up a comprehensive plan to regain Chinese support for the party and Barisan Nasional.

"We are drawing up a Chinese community development blueprint to resolve many issues affecting the community."

Liow said MCA was also appealing to Perlis Menteri Besar Azlan Man to look into the problems faced by the Chinese community in the state.

On the Perlis government's housing quota policy, he said MCA would propose to the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (Rehda) to implement a mechanism that would be fairer to the developers.

The Perlis state assembly sitting yesterday was told that the 70-30 per cent quota (70 per cent for Bumiputeras and 30 per cent for non-Bumiputeras) implemented since last year was fair in terms of racial composition in Perlis as Bumiputeras made up 80 per cent of the state's population.
