Royal Malaysian Navy personnel are set to rescue 123 tourists stranded on Pulau Tioman after passenger ferry services to the mainland were halted due to bad weather and rough seas.

The personnel, from the Maritime Region 1 (MAWILLA 1) in Tanjung Gelang near here, deployed the KD Terengganu vessel at midnight last night for the mission.

A statement issued today by MAWILLA 1 said the vessel was mobilised to bring back the tourists after it was notified by the Pahang State Secretariat.

"The rough seas and bad weather have resulted in passenger ferry services to be halted, leaving the tourists stranded on the island," said the statement.

It said the ship was also taking food from the Rompin Social Welfare Department for the residents of Pulau Tioman. -- Bernama
