The police have set up a special team to investigate a man's claim that he is the sultan of Melaka, said Central Melaka Police chief ACP Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah.

He said the police, acting on a report from the Melaka Chief Minister's office, would conduct the investigation in the Klang Valley to find proof on the claim as well as witnesses or individuals related to the case.

"We are also tracking down the man who claims to be the Sultan of Melaka to record his statement and of those who have received awards from him," he told reporters, Monday.

He said the man would be investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 for claiming to be the Sultan of Melaka.

He also said that the police had received a report, which was made by the Melaka Chief Minister's office, against businessman Noor Jan Tuah, 58, who had claimed to be the Sultan of Melaka, at the Air Keroh Police Station at 10.30am on Dec 30.

Noor Jan had been remanded by the Melaka Magistrate's Court to help in the investigation into a case involving himself claiming to be the Sultan of Melaka on Jan 15 last year.

The Noor Jan issue drew attention again after a picture of him holding an investiture ceremony to confer awards on several individuals and activists went viral on social media.

Meanwhile, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said Noor Jan must respect the state and national laws and not undermine the existing harmony.

"This issue touches on the governance of a state ... a nation which is sovereign and independent. The matter is not a subject for jokes, and every citizen must uphold the Federal Constitution," he told reporters.
