The Foreign Ministry today confirmed that two Malaysian hikers went missing at Mount Damavand, Iran since Sunday after they split up from their hiking group.

They have been identified as Syed Redzuan Syed Salim Shatri, 50 and Ramli Abd Majid, 44 according to a friend of the hikers Mad Shah Miour Mat Kosim when contacted by Astro AWANI.

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said that four rescue teams have been mobilized to search for the missing hikers.

"The ministry hopes the hikers will be found soon in safe condition.

"We also want to extend our appreciation and gratitude to Iranian authorities for assisting in search and rescue operation," Reezal Merican said in a statement on Wednesday.

Wisma Putra said the Malaysian Embassy in Tehran is in close contact with the local authorities to assist in the search and rescue operation.

They will also continue to monitor the case and update on the matter accordingly, the ministry added.

Malaysians who are travelling or residing abroad are also advised to register with the Malaysian Embassy or Consulate in that country, particularly during emergency situations.
