JOHOR BAHRU: A wheel-chair bound biryani rice seller here is using the business to not only generate income to support his family but also as a platform for him to perform charity.

Zulkiflee Hussin who sustained a spinal cord injury following a fall at work in 2003, said he set a low price of RM5 for his chicken biryani rice in conjunction with the blessed month of Ramadan as his way to give back to society.

"Until now I do not raise the price because I still make profits, although not much, for me it is OK to earn a little as long as the (rice) sold out. In fact, my biryani rice is always sold out.

"The biryani dishes are really in demand and the RM5 price is only for Ramadan," he told Bernama when met at Permas Ramadan Bazaar, here, recently.

Helped by his wife and daughter, he also sells 'nasi ambeng' for RM5 and lamb biryani rice (RM12), and able to earn RM500 per day.

According to Zulkiflee, before becoming a person with disabilities (PwD), he was working as a driving teacher but was forced to quit his job due to his injuries.

The father of four said he kept on striving to provide for his family despite facing difficulties, adding that in 2012 he started the business after his brother taught him their family's biryani rice recipe.

Being wheel-chair bound does not restrict his movement much as he can drive himself to buy items for his business using a modified car.

"The car is part of my legs; I always go to work and buy stuff for the business using the car.

"I advise those with the same fate as me, not to give up even though we cannot walk and such. I, myself, in the beginning, felt that my life was over, but I looked at the people around me, who were my family, they were always encouraging and cared about me, (so) why must I lose hope. They were the ones who motivated me," said Zulkiflee.
