GUA MUSANG: A herd of five wild elephants destroyed a part of an eight-hectare banana plantation owned by an Orang Asli man in Kampung Char, Pos Hendrop, on Monday.

Jemau Alang, 53, said he had suffered losses estimated at RM10,000 when the wild elephants destroyed 1,000 of the 5,000 banana plants, which are ready for harvest, in the incident believed to have occurred between 1 and 4 am.

"I saw 1,000 banana plants were destroyed when I entered the farm to cut the bananas.

"We quickly rushed home because we fear for our safety as the elephants could still be roaming near the village," he told reporters when met here today.

Another villager Badrul Nizam Nazrul Anjang, 27, who is also Jemau's son-in-law said they had installed lamps along the main entrance to the banana plantation but it failed to deter the elephants.
