Islamic Law is among the proposals which will be tabled by the UMNO Wanita Movement at the 2016 UMNO General Assembly which is scheduled to begin on Nov 29.

The motion includes the standardisation of Islamic law in Malaysia, inheritance law and legal empowerment of the Syariah Court.

Its chairman Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the proposals are a result of discussions that took place at the Syariah Roundtable session organised by the Legal and Advocacy Bureau of the movement.

"We felt the need to discuss issues related to Syariah legislation to ensure 'substantive content' from UMNO Wanita and the grassroots.

"The issues discussed are also comprehensive and not limited to women's issues. After the proposals are presented, a special committee will be established under the women's movement to solve these issues," she said at a media conference after the closing of the Syariah Roundtable session.

The one-day event, which was held for the first time, was chaired by UMNO Wanita vice chief Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun and participated by Syariah law practitioners and national syariah law policy makers, including the chief Syariah judge of Perak, Selangor and Johor. -- Bernama
