The Cabinet has reinstated the exemption of the cabotage policy for non-Malaysian vessels to conduct undersea cable repairs, with the Transport Ministry to proceed with the gazetting process.

The statement by an Indonesian Consul in Sabah pertaining to the use of wooden hull ships and smaller vessels in Malaysian and Indonesian waters by linking them with the cabotage policy is inaccurate.

It will prepare domestic players to participate in future cable repairing or larger projects while positioning M'sia as a data centre hub.

The current cancellation of the cabotage policy exemption is only for repair works and does not prevent the entry of foreign investments.

Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Amazon are seeking to meet Ismail Sabri to ask that foreign vessels be allowed to repair undersea cables.

Industry sources have stated that new submarine cables that were planned to land in Malaysia have now been put on hold by foreign investors.

There are two strong opposing views on the issue of the cabotage policy impacting the undersea internet cable industry.

Malaysia's cabotage policy was not the reason why giant technology companies skipped the country in their plans to install undersea cables.

With shorter repair time of undersea cable, Sabah would be able to capture numerous new and enormous opportunities.

The cabotage policy exemption from June 1 will enable more entrepreneurs in Sabah to export their products at competitive costs.

Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said implementation of the cabotage policy, particularly involving export companies in Sabah, will be discussed at next month's meeting of the National Export Council.
