Thieves broke into a warehouse at France's renowned Chateau d'Yquem and made away with 380 half bottles of wine worth 100,000 euros, a source close to investigators said Monday.

The alarm functioned properly but the thieves were able to flee before the police arrived, the source said. Chateau d'Yquem confirmed the robbery but gave no details.

The 2010 vintage in the bottles stolen overnight is not considered one of Yquem's most exceptional but a half bottle still fetches close to $500.

Chateau d'Yquem is the most prestigious sweet white wine in the Bordeaux area and is considered one of the world's greatest wines. Collectors have paid record prices for historical vintages dating from as early as the 18th century.
