Eight Indonesian soldiers were shot dead by unknown gunmen believed to be from a separatist movement at two security posts in Puncak Jaya, Papua.

One of them was slain in Tingginambut at 9.30 am while seven others in Sinak one hour later, said the Indonesian police.

The Gerakan Sivil Bersenjata Papua was believed to be behind both attacks.

Condemning the attacks, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said efforts to achieve peace, accelerate the development and provide privileges in Papua were hampered by the irresponsible action.

He offered his condolences to the bereaved families and asked community, ethnic and religious leaders to cooperate with the government to create a conducive environment in Papua without provocation from irresponsible elements.
