IN a strategic maneuver aimed at fortifying its maritime defense capabilities, the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has recently acquired four cutting-edge Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) G2000 MK II. Delivered by Gading Marine Industry Sdn Bhd, these vessels signify the initial installment of a broader procurement initiative, encompassing a total of 13 crafts commissioned by the Malaysian government in 2022. This procurement initiative follows the delivery of six G2000 Mk I vessels in April 2021, underscoring Malaysia's steadfast commitment to elevating its naval strength.

The G2000 Mk II models boast several advanced features. Constructed with an aluminium hull, they displace approximately 26 tonnes at standard load. Each craft is 18 meters long with a beam of 4.6 meters, powered by two MAN V12 diesel engines and two Hamilton waterjets. This configuration enables the Mk II FICs to reach a top speed of 50 knots, with an operational range exceeding 350 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 35 knots.

A significant upgrade in the Mk II variant is its ability to accommodate a crew member and a machine gun mount in the forward position, enhancing situational awareness. The larger deck space in the aft section can accommodate special forces troops, and the crafts are equipped with a long-range acoustic hailing device and a rear gunner manning a mount for 7.62 mm guns.

These vessels, capable of accommodating a crew of five and eight military personnel, are designed for a wide range of missions, including coastal patrol, interception, clandestine operations, search and rescue, and rapid response. They are armed with a 12.7mm Remote Controlled Weapon System (RCWS), significantly enhancing their capabilities over the Mk I predecessor. The increased horsepower allows these 18-meter vessels to reach speeds of 52 knots per hour.

The G2000 Mk II is also the first in the RMN to feature the Turkish-made CANiK M2 QCB heavy machine gun (HMG), further enhancing their firepower. This RCWS enables automatic controlled firing, reducing crew exposure to enemy fire and improving targeting accuracy.

Key Features of the FIC G2000 MK II:

1. High Speed: These interceptor craft are built for speed, capable of reaching impressive velocities, which will enable the TLDM to respond swiftly to any suspicious activities at sea.

2. Advanced Surveillance: Equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance systems, including radar and sonar, these vessels will provide the TLDM with unparalleled situational awareness, making them a formidable force in the region.

3. Enhanced Firepower: The FIC G2000 MK II is armed with cutting-edge weaponry, ensuring that the TLDM can effectively deter and counteract any potential threats.

4. Versatility: These vessels are designed for a wide range of missions, from patrolling and interception to search and rescue operations, making them invaluable assets for the TLDM.

This acquisition is particularly pertinent given Malaysia's strategic position and the challenges it faces in the South China Sea. The deployment of these FICs in the waters off the East Coast of Sabah is a clear message of Malaysia's readiness to protect its territorial integrity, especially in light of frequent territorial incursions by China. The presence of numerous islands in Sabah makes the FICs highly relevant for patrolling and intercepting missions in shallow and island-strewn waters.

Moreover, the success of Gading Marine in delivering these crafts underscores the capability of local Malaysian industries in contributing to the nation's defence sector, challenging any stigma associated with the local defence industry.

In the broader context of regional maritime security, the RMN's enhancement of its fast interceptor fleet is a decisive step towards maintaining sovereignty and securing maritime borders against any form of encroachment or threat, particularly from aggressive stances adopted by regional powers like China.
