A man armed with a samurai sword who ran amok in the vicinity of the Prime Minister's Department last year surrendered only after being shot at and sustaining injuries, the Sessions Court here was told today.

Corporal Ridzuan Megat Ahmad, 32, from the Putrajaya police headquarters, MPV branch said he fired two shots in the direction of Khalil Afendi Abd Hamid, 47, and Muhdalena Ahmad, 28, after they refused to heed his order to put down the weapon.

He said he fired out of fear for his safety as the distance between him and them was too close.

Testifying as the ninth prosecution witness in Muhdalena's trial, Ridzuan said the couple appeared very aggressive and Khalil Afendi was brandishing the sword as they advanced toward him.

He said he gave them three warnings to put down the weapon and surrender.

The deceased (Khalil) warned back, 'Polis jangan masuk campur, kalau tidak mati' (police don't interfere or you'll die)."

Ridzuan said while he was giving the second warning, Khalil warned him to put away his gun or else he (Khalil) would behead him.

"After being fired at, they walked to the five-foot way and sat down, and the deceased (Khalil) said 'Saya surrender' (I surrender)," he said when questioned by deputy public prosecutor Kalmizah Salleh.

Muhdalena is facing four charges, under the Penal Code, the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958, and Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959.

She is accused of criminally intimidating Ridzuan at Complex 'B' of the Prime Minister's Department on July 9, 2012 and possession of a sword at the same place and date.

She also allegedly failed to heed Ridzuan's order to put down the sword, and to abide by a minister's advice to obtain a pass or permit for entering the premises.

Meanwhile, Ridzuan disagreed with counsel M.Visvanathan's suggestion that he had used excessive force by shooting at the couple.

The trial before Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam has been adjourned to June 12.
