Geologists do not rule out that dinosaurs may have existed in this country based on evidence embedded in rocks from the Jurassic and Cretaceous period between 203 million to 65 million years ago, found in several areas in the country.

Furthermore, a left femur bone of the first sauropod dinosaur was also discovered in Khon Kaen in Northeast Thailand in 1976.

Department of Mineral and Geoscience director-general Datuk Yunus Abd Razak said the Jurassic and Cretaceous period areas have been discovered at Gunung Panti, Johor and also at Gunung Gagau bordered by the three states of Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang which confirms the possible existence of dinosaur fossils.

"But so far we have not been lucky enough to find any dinsour fossils. Only fossilised ancient plants from the Jurassic and Cretaceous period have been found embedded in a layer of sandstone so far", he told reporters after a visit to the location where fossils of ancient plants, aged between 270 to 340 million years, have been found by a group of geologists on a hill near the construction site of the Paya Peda dam in Hulu Besut here, yesterday.

However, he said he would carry out a research expedition in some areas to make geological observations to find fossilised fauna and more fossilised flora.

Yunus said since 1974, studies have been carried out in many areas including Sungai Chincir in Terengganu and Panti in Johor but only fossilised flora have been discovered.

He said maybe he would get experts from Thailand to locate dinosaur fossils here because they have the experience.

He said JMG would be collaborating with the Malaysian Geological Heritage Group and expert geologists to continue inventory work, search, classification, valuation while rating of relevant geological heritage resources throughout the country will be exposed and exhibited to future generations for their knowledge.
