Police will record a statement from the parents of a 14-year-old teenager who was injured badly while playing
homemade firecrackers in Kampung Toh Kah, Dungun on June 16.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Rosli Ab Rahman said a thorough investigation would be carried out since it was the first case in the state this year.

"We (police) will record a statement from the parents and the victim who is currently admitted at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ). We want to find out if the firecrackers were made at home or bought from someone," he said.

Rosli added that if the cause of the incident was due to negligence on the part of the parents or guardian, action could be taken against them, including legal action.

On June 16, Mohd Haiqal Firdaus Mohd Abdullah from Kampung Padang Pulut suffered serious injuries while playing firecrackers at his grandfather's house in Kampung Tok Kah.

The firecrackers exploded in his hand before he could release it.

Meanwhile, Rosli urged parents and guardians to be aware of the dangers of playing firecrackers or fireworks.

"Parents must be alert and prevent their children from playing firecrackers or fireworks," he said.
