The two-metre-long ‘flaperon’ found in the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion on Thursday could float because it is made out of light composite.

This is the opinion of former MAS chief pilot Datuk Captain Nik Ahmad Huzlan Nik Hussain who said that there may also be ‘air pockets’ in the flaperone found.

“In modern jets, there are wings that are used to assist landing. They help to slow the plane down during landing.

“The flaperones are not waterproof and that it one of the reasons they can float,” he said.
