SHAH ALAM:The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) has appointed e-commerce platform Shopee, as its zakat (tithe) collection agent to facilitate the payment of zakat by Muslims in the state.

LZS chief executive officer Saipolyazan M Yusop said Muslims in Selangor can now pay property zakat and zakat ‘fitrah’ or personal tithe, without limit and at any time through the Shopee application from Dec 18.

"Users only need to select the payment of zakat through the 'Deals, Top-ups & Bills' section in the Shopee application and follow the simple steps.

"Payment of zakat can be done through the ShopeePay e-wallet, debit cards, online banking and cash payments at 7-Eleven counters," he said in a statement here today.

Saipolyazan added that the zakat campaign on the Shopee platform would run from Dec 22 to Dec 31, with the first 1,000 zakat payers every day during the campaign period set to receive 200 Shopee coins.

"The appointment of Shopee as the first e-commerce platform to work with LZS, is timely.

"LZS is always diversifying payment channels for the convenience of Muslims to pay zakat safely. Given the current situation and under new norms, this cooperation is expected to help many Shopee users, especially among Muslims to pay zakat," he said.

He added that through the application, Muslims who had the means and met the conditions of zakat could help the ‘asnaf’ (zakat recipient) groups in Selangor who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
