It was an incident that shocked residents and students in Selayang Baru.

A man was shot dead while his wife critically injured after they were shot by two unidentified men at SMK Darul Ehsan in Selayang Baru at 12.30pm.

The man, a 41-year old security guard, and his wife were waiting for their child in their Toyota Camry when a motorcyclist and his pillion rider suddenly shot the couple six times, hitting the man in the neck and the wife in the stomach.

The man, who was an Emergency Ordinance detainee released six months ago, succumbed to injuries while the wife is in critical condition.

It is unclear if the child was hurt in the incident at Press time.

An SMK Darul Ehsan school clerk, who wanted to be known as Azmi, said was unaware of the incident until he heard a commotion outside the school.

"I thought it was a firecracker as many are still in the Hari Raya mood. I only later realised that a shooting incident had taken place," he added.

Gombak OCPD ACP Abdul Rahim Abdullah confirmed the incident.

“We have obtained the CCTVs from the school and are retrieving information from the victim’s handphone,” said Abdul Rahim.

“We are also speaking to several witnesses. We aim to nab the culprits soon.”

Those staying in Selayang Baru fear for their safety as they claim the crime rate has heightened over the years. For the record there are four other schools – SK Selayang Baru 1, SK Selayang Baru 2, SJK(C) Selayang Baru and SMK Selayang Baru – in the largely residential area.

Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen said he has received reports from residents over the escalating crime situation in the area.

“I have been informed of the (shooting) incident and I believe the Police are working on it. I meet the residents regularly and they have voiced their concern over the crime rate in the area,” added William.

This is the latest incident following two shooting episodes over the weekend. A shop owner was shot dead in Marang, Terengganu while two individuals were shot dead during a commotion at a club along Jalan Doraisamy in KL on Sunday morning.
