The Kuching City South Council (MBKS) has ordered all new development in their area to provide better facilities for disabled users since 2004, said MBKS mayor Datuk James Chan Khay Syn.

He said since than most of the buildings in MBKS areas are disabled friendly.

"MBKS was top city council in terms of ensuring new buildings are disabled friendly. We don't compromise, all new buildings must have ramps or lift access for disabled users, more or less all new buildings must comply with MBKS criteria," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after a briefing session of MBKS' achievements in 2012 to Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, here, today.

State Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah who commended MBKS for taking the initiative to push for disabled friendly facilities in buildings, hoped other local authorities will emulate MBKS in providing disabled friendly access in their buildings and push for ramps and toilets for the handicapped in new development.
