Police will no longer use the RM1,000 compound as the main deterrent against those who continue to violate the Movement Control Order (MCO), Senior Minister (Security Cluster), Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

Instead, he said, the first day of the third phase of the MCO tomorrow would see those detained, are remanded before being brought to court.

He said the decision on the sterner action was made due to the growing apathy among the people as shown by as the increasing number of those who violate the MCO directives.

“We see as if the people do not care or are not afraid of the laws we have today. Maybe RM1,000 (compound) is not considered high enough to scare off those who continue to defy the MCO.

"Therefore, we have agreed that the police will no longer focus on the compound from tomorrow. Instead, anyone detained will be remanded or brought to court, and let the court decide a heavier sentence," he said at a COVID-19 daily media conference here today.

Ismail Sabri said 1,374 individuals were detained yesterday for defaulting on the MCO, including 931 individuals who were issued RM1,000 compounds; 418 individuals have been remanded and 25 individuals released on police bail.

In addition, he said, a total of 427 individuals had been indicted in court for violating the MCO.

"The total number of cumulative arrests of the MCO, as of April 13, 2020, is 9,990 individuals and the total number of compounds is 4,036," he added.
