A total of 20,257 road accidents and 155 fatalities were recorded nationwide over the last seven days since the Op Selamat 7/2015, was launched last Friday.

Bukit Aman Traffic chief Datuk Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said out of the total fatalities, motorcyclists and pillion riders made up the largest number with 94 cases and vehicles 35 cases.

"Out of the 155 deaths, 97 occurred on federal and state roads while there 20 deaths each on the highways and municipal roads," he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

The average mortality rate was higher at 22 persons daily throughout the Op Selamat compared to 13 during the same period last year.

He said the police was investigating every fatal cases to identify the cause of the accident after Op Selamat ends on July 24.

Mohd Fuad said up till last night 53,634 summons were issued to road users for speeding, 2,508 for overtaking and 543 for misusing the emergency lane.
