Parks and enforcement officers of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) managed to foil two attempts to encroach into and steal from the Kubah National Park and Gunung Gading National Park here last Wednesday.

The corporation, in a statement, here today said a group of poachers had attempted to extract the much sought after agarwood (gaharu) from the Kubah National Park.

"They made a hasty retreat from the makeshift shed that they had put up at the park boundary when they sensed they had been detected.

"From the items left behind, they are believed to be foreigners," the statement said.

In the second case occurring at Gunung Gading National Park, SFC said the intruders were illegal loggers.

"Their presence was detected by patrolling park personnel who gave chase but were able only to seize two chainsaws and 241 pieces of hewn timber, all from the commercially valuable Shorea species," it said.

SFC said both encroachments had been reported to the police.

"We will continue to remain vigilant, especially during the upcoming holiday season in safeguarding the national parks under our care," SFC added. -BERNAMA
