Selangor UMNO Youth today lodged a police report against Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali for allegedly slandering Barisan Nasional (BN) over the proposed appointment of Tan Sri Shukry Mohd Salleh as Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman.

Its chief Zainuri Zainal said the Selangor Menteri Besar had to be called up to make a statement as his statement contradicted the Official Secrets Act 1972 and that apparently insulted the Conference of Rulers.

"Mohamed Azmin has made a dishonest, malicious and baseless statement when he gave the impression as if the appointment of EC deputy chairman was 'arranged'.

"If his claim is not true, this is a slanderous statement that has been sensationalised in the state assembly sitting which insulted the Conference of Rulers," he told reporters after lodging a report at the Shah Alam district police headquarters here.

Also present were state UMNO Youth secretary Datuk Ahmad Mua'adzam Shah Ya'akop and Petaling Jaya Utara Umno Youth division chief Mohd Fakhzan Md Noor.

On Nov 3, Mohamed Azmin during the state assembly sitting reportedly claimed that BN had proposed Shukry, who is the former private chief secretary to the Prime Minister to be appointed as EC deputy chairman but the proposal was not accepted by the Conference of Rulers.

Press secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad in a statement said that the proposal paper on Shukry's appointment as EC deputy chairman was not presented at the Conference of Rulers meeting. -- BERNAMA
