Two men died while five more were injured, including one in critical condition after they were struck by lightning while taking shelter from the rain in the compounds of a temple still under construction in Batu Kawan, here on Friday.

Those who died in the incident at 7 pm were a factory worker known as N.Arumugam, 42, and trader V.Sivaperumal, 56.

Both died at the scene of the incident after they were badly burnt from the lightning strike, said Seberang Perai Selatan District Deputy Police Chief DSP Shariffudin Abdullah.

He said the man who was critically injured was known as S. Gunasegaran, 44, who is currently being treated in the Penang Hospital while four others who were hurt, aged between 35 and 48, were treated at the Sungai Bakap Hospital.

They were reported to be in stable condition.

"During the incident, seven men were taking shelter in the temple from the heavy rain and strong winds, and most were believed to have just returned from work," he said when contacted here Friday night.

He said the bodies of the two men have been sent to the Sungai Bakap Hospital for a post-mortem.
