LONDON: Women's singles world No.1 Iga Swiatek from Poland was knocked out of the Wimbledon Championships by French veteran Alize Cornet on Saturday, leaving her best result at the grass-court Grand Slam a last 16 finish from last year, reported Xinhua.
Cornet, 32, also ended Swiatek's 37-match winning streak as she dominated the third round match 6-4, 6-2, reaching the round of the last 16 for the second time in her 15 attempts.
"This is the kind of match I'm living for," said Cornet. "I knew I could do it even though she had so many wins in a row because she feels a little less comfortable on grass than on other surfaces."
Two-time French Open champion Swiatek, with only 11 matches on grass in her career, admitted that she was still struggling on the surface.
"I was pretty confused about my tactics. As a solid player, she used that pretty well. For sure, it wasn't a good performance for me. But I'm looking forward to the next experiences," said the 21-year-old.
Another clay expert Rafael Nadal played more confidently at Wimbledon as the 22 Grand Slam champion breezed past Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
"It's my best match, without a doubt, since the tournament started," said the Spaniard. "I made a lot of things much better than the previous days, the determination, the way that I manage to play more aggressively, going to the net plenty of times."
Nadal even spent one minute less than compatriot Paula Badosa to finish the match while the women's singles fourth seed defeated former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic 7-5, 7-6 (4) in two hours and five minutes.
Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen lost to 17th seed Elena Rybakina in straight sets.
Zheng, 19, aroused a stir at the French Open as she stunned two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep and French veteran Alize Cornet en route to reach to the last 16 and took the first set before losing to the eventual winner, Swiatek.
Nick Kyrgios will play in the second week at Wimbledon for the fourth time as the Australian overcame one set down to knock out Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
